Where the Dollar Gets You a Deal

This digital nomad dream is getting a bit more affordable…at least for U.S. travelers.

With currency markets betting that the Federal Reserve will pause rate cuts, the dollar has reversed losses from earlier in the year…and then some.

Back in April, the USD/MXN exchange rate fell as low as 16 Mexican pesos per U.S. dollar. Six months later, the exchange rate sits over 20% higher at 20 pesos per dollar. The story is similar in Colombia, where the U.S. dollar has surged from 3,700 pesos to over 4,300 pesos. And in Brazil, the dollar is closing in on the 2020 all-time high against the real.

Although the dollar has dropped 5% from its record-breaking move against the Japanese yen, it’s still sitting on 8% gains for 2024. The strong dollar/weak yen continues to make Japan a historic deal for bargain-hunting travelers.

Airfare Booking Window for the Holidays

If you haven’t booked your Christmas flights, then you might want to get on that…now.

Thanksgiving

Earlier this month, we reported on Google Flights’ guidelines for the best time to book cheap(er) flights for the holidays. Although we’re already past the prime window for booking Thanksgiving flights, it’s best not to wait any longer. According to the 2024 Hopper holiday hacks report, flight prices could surge by up to $30 a day in the final two weeks before Thanksgiving.

Christmas

Statistically, stragglers still have time for scoring Christmas airfare deals, but we’re in the home stretch. Going by Google’s analysis, the statistical prime window ends on November 10. After that, Hopper expects airfare to balloon by over 30% in the final 3-4 weeks before the holiday.
