Nomad Tax Season 2025 (Part 2)

Previously, we reviewed how U.S. digital nomads can reduce their federal income tax burden. This week, here’s the summary on what you should know for eliminating state income taxes.

(Disclaimer: always consult a qualified tax pro for personal advice.)

What is residency?

Residency generally refers to where a person is considered a legal resident for tax, voting, and legal purposes. Each state has its own rules for determining residency, but it usually depends on several factors:

  • Domicile – The place you consider your permanent home, where you intend to return after any absence.

  • Physical Presence – Many states use a "183-day rule," meaning if you spend at least 183 days in the state, you may be considered a resident for tax purposes.

  • Connections to the State – Owning property, having a driver’s license, registering to vote, or sending children to school in the state can all indicate residency.

As of 2025, the following U.S. states do not levy a personal income tax:

Alaska

Florida

Nevada

New Hampshire

South Dakota

Tennessee

Texas

Washington

Wyoming

Of those nine, Texas and Florida are the most nomad-friendly due to the ease of establishing residency without physically residing in the state. Thousands of digital nomads now call these states home, at least on paper.
