Latin America: The Most and Least Expensive Cities

Medellin, Colombia long stood as one of the cheapest cities in Latin America for cost of living (and, uh, other things). But not anymore.

In fact, the city now ranks in the middle of the pack for affordability. Puebla, Mexico, located 60 miles southeast of Mexico City, takes the crown as the least expensive nomad hotspot in Latam. According to data from Numbeo, monthly cost of living (including rent for a one-bedroom apartment) comes in at just $621. In New York City, that same life would cost $5,800.

  • Coming in at #2, Merida, Mexico is widely regarded as the safest city in the country. In 2022, the UN City Prosperity Index named Merida as the Mexican city with the highest quality of life.

  • At #6, Barranquilla, Colombia ranks as the cheapest major city in South America. Situated between Cartagena and Santa Marta, Barranquilla is most famous for its annual Carnaval (pictured above). And, of course, as the birthplace of Shakira.

  • Bringing up the rear is Montevideo, Uruguay at just over $2,100 per month. Still, that’s 63% cheaper than New York City. Lately, the city has been rising in popularity among nomads due to its reputation for relative safety.
