Mexico Beach Deals for the Winter

is this city the next Playa del Carmen?

Winter is coming. For digital nomads, that can only mean one thing.

Time for the beach.

This week we’ll address news from two Mexican beach destinations: one that’s all over the ‘gram, and another that nobody ever talks about. Vamos!

This Week in Nomad Deals

  • Tulum Flights Are Here: Delta and Spirit are the first U.S. airlines to sell tickets to the new Tulum airport.

  • Is Mazatlán the New Playa Del Carmen? This Mexico beach city could be the next nomad hotspot

For Sale: Direct Flights to Tulum

Changes are getting real in Tulum.

Once a little-known Mexican beach getaway, Tulum has morphed into one of the world’s foremost destinations for IG influencers — and it’s about to get worse (or better…guess it depends on your perspective).

The brand spankin’ new Tulum International Airport (TQO) will open for travel this December. The new hub will allow travelers to bypass a 2 hour bus or taxi ride south from Cancun’s airport. Participation from U.S. airlines has been — shall we say — up in the air for awhile. But now things are looking more concrete.

Delta Airlines announced that nonstop flights from Atlanta will commence in March 2024. Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines is offering an introductory deal for $149 one-way tickets from Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.

Is Mazatlán the Next Mexican Nomad Hotspot?

While we’re on the subject of Mexican beaches, let’s take a trip to an emerging nomad hotspot that hasn’t been overrun by tourists.

Mexico is already the most popular international destination for U.S. travelers and digital nomads. An estimated 1.6 million Americans live in Mexico full-time. Many flock to name-brand destinations like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Mexico City.

But on the Pacific coast, Mazatlán — a city of 500,000 people — is home to just a few thousand gringos. Monthly rent is 25% below Playa del Carmen, meaning that an individual can live on less than $1,000 USD a month.

“Incredible services and infrastructure, which match any other Mexican beach destination, are both essential and inviting for North American citizens contemplating long stays in Mexico,” an official from the city’s tourism board told Euronews.

Other benefits:

  • 12 miles of coastline

  • Modern 5G network and fiber optics

  • Access to major retailers such as Walmart

  • Recently restored historic district
