Ranking European cities by cost of living
You might have guessed that London is the most expensive European capital city for cost of living. But this week, we uncover where you can rent an apartment for just $335 downtown…

And the Award for Least Expensive European Capital Goes to…
Skopje, North Macedonia (don’t worry — I had never heard of it before, either).
Fun Facts About Skopje
According to data from Numbeo, you can expect to pay 77% less to live in Skopje than in New York City.
The average one-bedroom apartment in the center of North Macedonia’s capital costs $335 per month. Meanwhile, the same apartment in Manhattan rents for over ten times as much — a whopping $4,300!
North Macedonia is one of the few remaining European countries that still provides a “golden passport” for sale.
The full rankings can be found below. For reference, NYC = 100, meaning that a city with a score of 30 is 70% cheaper than NYC. The median U.S. big city scores around 61.
For Sale: Egyptian Citizenship
If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming an Egyptian, the country just started offering its own “golden passport” (cue jokes from current Egyptians about selling their citizenship for half the price).
To obtain citizenship, you must meet one of the falling requirements:
$250K "donation" to the government
$300K real estate investment
$350K investment into a business + $100K donation to government
$500K deposit into Egyptian bank for 3 years
Only issue is that the Egyptian passport is, uhhh, not great — currently ranked 92 out of 111 on the Henley passport index. For most digital nomads, citizenship in Egypt would carry little benefit. But other golden passport programs (such as Malta’s) are actually super useful for wealthy nomads.
How to Find the Best Weather for Your Trip
