€15,000 to Live in Spain? Sí!

In Barcelona, where the city government has announced plans to totally ban Airbnb, disgruntled locals recently made headlines for blasting tourists in cafes with squirt guns. Elsewhere in Spain, however, local governments are earmarking millions of euros in handouts to digital nomads.

The Deal

The Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura plans to offer financial incentives to digital nomads who relocate to the region. Up to €15,000 is available to remote workers who commit to living there for at least two years. The initiative is set to launch this fall for 200 applicants.

To be eligible, applicants must be highly qualified tech professionals and able to work remotely. Foreign non-EU nationals must also hold a Spanish digital nomad visa.

Background

Many parts of rural southern Europe have grappled with depopulation, leading some towns and regions to offer financial incentives for digital nomads to move there.
