Canada’s Digital Nomad Policy: What to Know
Back in August of 2023, we reported on Canada’s plans for attracting digital nomads to the country. Now, we finally have an update.
Last week, the Canadian government dropped details on its new digital nomad policy. Here are the key points:
You don’t need a special digital nomad visa
Canada’s program is different from other countries in that there is no separate digital nomad visa. Instead, anyone who comes on a normal visitor visa can work remotely for a foreign employer or their own business (Strictly speaking, most countries prohibit working remotely on a tourist visa.) Also, no special documentation is required.
You can stay for up to 6 months
Digital nomads in Canada are allowed to stay and work remotely for “up to 6 months at a time.”
You can search for employment in Canada
Digital nomads in Canada are allowed to search for a local Canadian employer while they are in the country. If you do find a company willing to hire you, then you can apply for a normal work permit.
How do you apply for a visitor visa?
U.S. citizens: show passport at the border (no cost).
EU and some others: obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization ($7 CAN).
Most countries: must apply for a visitor visa
Requirements vary from country to country. You can use the IRCC’s online visitation wizard to figure out the requirements for your own passport.
Never Do This With Your Passport
Another day, another viral travel nightmare story.
This time, a woman posted about how her husband was denied boarding due to a minor stain on his passport book.
Some airlines will refuse boarding for minor tears and other damage to the passport book.
Obviously very silly and frustrating, but always check that your documents look good.
Protective covers can also be purchased cheaply on sites like Amazon or Temu.

Such stories are not one-time, isolated incidents. Make sure that your passport book remains free of tears and stains. Protective covers can be purchased for cheap on sites like Amazon or Temu.
Add this one to our previous list of big travel screwups to avoid in 2024.
